DAWN SANEL
One of Dawn’s first childhood memories is that of her father’s pencil drawings of trees and animals, and of his reverence for the natural world. With his encouragement and guidance, she began to make her own finely-detailed nature drawings in pencil and pen-and-ink at a young age, finding great mystery in a winter tree’s branches, the structure of a thistle, the slow unfurling of a peony in June.
She made the transition to painting with the watercolor medium, thrilled by its possibilities: the vivid pigment floating on top of a clean sheet of white paper, the gorgeous transparency and the "happy accidents" that typify watercolor painting. In addition to nature studies, she painted landscapes and still life, as well as portraits. Although mainly self-taught, she has taken classes and workshops with several wonderful artists.
Currently Dawn is working in pastels. After her first pastel workshop, she was hooked on the medium, which allows the direct application of layer upon layer of rich, vibrant color and texture, and lends itself perfectly to interpreting the subject matter she is most interested in, mainly the unique landscapes of New England and Ireland.
Dawn is a member of the New Hampshire Pastel Society, the MAA, and a juried member of the gallery at Sharon Arts in Peterborough, New Hampshire.
