I start a painting by taking some time to think about mood, color and composition. I then sketch out some composition possibilities. I choose to paint in oil because of the intensity of the colors and their experimental options, allowing changing and mixing of the colors directly on the canvas. Landscapes—to me always captivating—are my favorite subject. The sky and light are always changing, and doing something interesting to the landscape below. Inspiration for my painting comes from various places I have lived and visited, from the changing light and seasons and from the colors I see in nature. I love a painterly painting. I try to paint emotional textures and bring a new dimension to the ordinary. All my paintings and the colors I choose are both a result of and an expression of my life’s experiences.
